Re: Overdrive switch ?

Sometimes the short stretches of two lanes are the only way to get past the cars and caravans going even slower (than 50 mph). While towing a trailer on narrow hilly sections in rural Devon? I can understand why you would find the overdrive/3rd-gear button useful and it shows how radically differen...

Re: Overdrive switch ?

I assume it's also a good idea to flick the overdrive off and unlock the torque convertor if faced with a long, steep, downhill stretch (particularly if signed with an "engage low gear now" warning). Toyota have created some confusion over labelling this button as "overdrive". Y...

Re: Overdrive switch ?

Saab were still using a selectable freewheel mode in the early 60s - but that was on their 3 cylinder two stroke! I find it worth flicking the overdrive off when on a long gradient on the motorway, before the revs drop too much, then flick it back on once the rise has been crested. The ECT becomes u...

Re: Transmission failure diagnosis

They stripped down the other side (had the hub off) and said the splines were OK. Apparently the replacement Driver's side one is a redesigned part which allows a bit more length of engagement of the splines.

All good now and front brake pads replaced while they had it and the ATF topped up.

Re: Solar Top Up

Mine is a TPS-946. Maplins do them for about £40 but I'm sure you could find the same unit on Ebay for less.

Re: Transmission failure diagnosis

Well luckily it seems I have a top notch auto gearbox specialist within a mile from home who even prepares drag racing transmissions. He has already had a look and it appears that it is actually the driver's side front drive shaft spline failure that others have reported. The parts bill should be le...

Re: Solar Top Up

Most solar chargers come with crocodile clips and/or a cigarette lighter (accessory) plug. You can get an accessory socket ready wired to crocodile clips off Ebay. I use one of these to provide 240v via an inverter when not hooked up to mains. My leisure battery is behind the driver's door so fairly...

Transmission failure diagnosis

As I was slowing to walking pace to enter a roundabout on Saturday my 1996 3.0 4WD gave a loud bang from the front followed by a terrible grinding noise. Limped it round and back to the safe haven of an industrial unit car park (luckily the unit was closed but the car park was open). Obviously no po...

Re: granvia driveaway awning

I use a Khyam Motordome Tourer rapidex quick erect awning. Though I've thought about getting a rail groove fitted there doesn't seem to be much room! We use the adapter kit that Khyam supply with figure of eight strip going to a 'flap' which I secure by webbing straps over the van protected with foa...

Re: Potential newby. Advice please.

Just checked. The top of my tow ball is 45cms from the ground. There is a welded plate on the sqaure tube mounted across the back of the van to achieve this. It has a "Watling Engineers" label. I just received a cheque for the value of the bikes (beyond economic repair given the cost of ge...
