Lost the only key :(

I have a 98 Granvia campervan import and have lost the only key!

Will Toyota UK be able to help or will they turn me away due to it being an import?

Its been quite a while since I used it, maybe 6 months or so, but seem to recall it has only one button which activates the central locking. Does this activate the alarm as well? I know for a fact that when the alarm was on, the car would make a long beep tone, which gave me about 30 seconds before the alarm came on. If I inserted the key and turned it one click the tone would go off and the alarm wouldn't come on. So, is there anything special about the key (as in it needs to be paired to the alarm or something), or can I just get a blank cut?

Oh, and we're supposed to be moving house very shortly which may prove difficult with the Granvia on the drive

Can anyone even confirm if a 98 Granvia will have a transponder in the key please?

I've got a 98 with a key like the one you describe and it doesn't have a transponder; just remote locking.

I got my local Toyota dealer (Snows Southampton) to cut two additional keys from blanks using the remote/key and they work perfectly.

I asked about 6 or 7 years ago if they could get me an additional remote/key and was told that it would have been about £100 with no guarantee it would work...

I've also talked to key specialists about making a new remote, but I think that the Japanese use a different frequency so it's not possible.

Many thanks for the info, the remote locking is not an issue for me. I just need to get the key code now to get the key cut.

I'm not sure we have the same set up...

My key and the remote button are together as a unit, so I couldn't lose one without the other.

Could your remote be after market?

Yes, my key was one unit, from memory there was just the one button on the side for the remote locking. I just wanted to clarify if a 98 Granvia would also have a transponder chip inside or not.

I can live without the remote locking.

I've contacted a guy on ebay who cuts keys for a Toyota Hiace, as long as you have the key code and vin, but he's advised me he can't do it for a Granvia which surprised me as I believe its pretty much the same vehicle. Unless the Hiace was supplied to the UK officially and the Granvia wasn't? I still don't understand why he wouldn't be able to do that anyway.

You might ask your local Toyota dealer. Mine just looks up any part I need when I give him the vehicle reference, although I think the keys were copied from the one I had...

An update for those interested.

I contacted a local mobile auto locksmith who came out and had to remove the lock from one of the doors and take it away. £120 all in and I now have 2 keys, actually now 3 as the next door neighbour posted the original through the letterbox about 5 days later (we gave the old dear the door key in January when we went on holiday, and it seems the wife gave her the keyring with the camper key on it too)....

Just a few days ago on TV in Vancouver, I heard a story about an owner of a self imported toyota(grey market), who had lost their only key.
Apparently Toyota will only cut a new key if you drive the car to factory or dealer where the original owner bought the car from in Japan ??
